Profile

Fourth Order Architecture is an architectural firm in Charlotte, NC.  We provide building design, interior design and planning services.

FOA is a new firm by most measures, but principal Chuck Hardin has decades of experience in several building types. We believe that the design of targeted, functional and inventive architecture is independent of both specialization and scale.

Approach

We learn.  We already have a good amount of experienced-based expertise, but we still need to learn all that we can about project requirements as well as client needs and expectations.  When establishing a base of information, no information is insignificant.

We verify.  We verify client program and design goals.  And we will also verify zoning, perform code searches, and field-verify existing conditions.  A knowledge base that is as complete as possible is the necessary foundation for design and execution.

We design.  We solve problems.  We find solutions.  We understand aesthetics.  Design isn’t a mere step in the process; it’s a continuing endeavor.  Whether in the early strokes of concept development or the finite details, design is a self-informing, non-linear process.  And the 3D building model we create is a tool that provides instant design feedback.  Sometimes good design ideas are the result of the give and take of collaboration; sometimes they are the result of singular strokes of inspiration and invention.  Wherever the process takes us, a successful design outcome for our client is our most important measure of success.

We execute.  We are timely and efficient relative to the services requested.  Our design is targeted, functional and inventive; our construction documents are accurate and complete; and our BIM models are highly informative.

Principal

Practicing since 1983, Chuck is an award-winning designer who has experience in a variety of building types, scales and budgets.

He has seen design and project documentation evolve from hand drawing to 2D computer design to 3D Building Information Modeling using Revit.  Though Chuck still relies on hand sketching as a first step, he was an early adopter of those seminal technological advances. And he believes that BIM provides a quantum leap in capabilities, particularly when steered with the design strength and construction knowledge of a talented professional.

The term ‘passionate’ is often used to describe the culture at other architectural firms.  Passion is a great quality, but being inventive can bring greater value to your project.  That’s true in the development of design strategies as well as the ability to work through regulatory requirements.  Chuck will bring passion to your project, but will also bring invention.
